Kings Lynn – 21/01/24 – Unlimited Bangers Icebreaker XXX British Open Team Championship – Meeting Report

The 30th staging of the Unlimited Bangers Icebreaker or British Open Team Championship took place at the Adrian Flux Arena, Kings Lynn on Sunday 21st January 2024.

On the material front, 195 David Forrest topped the bill with a fresh Mk2 Lincoln Town Car. There were a couple of ‘different’ Volvo’s; 171 Andy Frost having a 240 saloon and 360 ‘Jackstar’ Jack Reynolds had a 960. Bears man 711 Alex Elliot and 267 Martin French returned their yanks from the Life of Riley weekend and it was a pair of used Rolls Royce Silver Shadows for 243 Pete Osborne and 188 John Reeves. 753 ‘Gypsy Boy’ Billy Cunningham returned his Mk4 Chrysler New Yorker from the 2019 Unlimited World Championship as he guested for TWT D. Fellow teammate for the day 623 ‘Tricky’ Ricky Hutton impressed on the paint front with his smart Jaguar X300 as did 827 Laiton Disdle with his Mercedes, whilst Predators trio 178 Kieran Bowman, 648 Jamie Smith and 671 Leo Moore were among others with tidy efforts, as well as all of the Posh Wash turning out smart motors.

The first Heat begun with TT267 Martin French sending TB711 Alex Elliot fence-wards. TB171 Andy Frost’s mistimed attack saw him go in on the nose to 711 Chunk. TB291 Seanie Bell was sat up on the scoreboard bend and was duly leathered by SBA199 Shaydy Gough. 267 Frenchy jacked Shaydy in turn. TWTA130 Joe Gladden spun TT800 Tom Hannah. SBA243 Pete Osborne drove through 267 Frenchy, before TB706 Alfie Turner homed in on 199 Shaydy. PA178 Kieran Bowman steamed in on 291 Bell. 800 Romeo laid into TB162 Brent Shaw. TWTA625 Gucci went in on 162 The Viking, which saw 800 Romeo run into the lame 291 Bell car. AA23 Sonny Parsons spun TT223 Brett Harrison. AA77 Aaron Charles homed in on Romeo. 267 Frenchy’s yank went bang in a big way exiting turn 4 creating a smoke screen causing TWTB349 Michael Allard to collect a marker tyre whilst challenging for the lead. 77 Aario went in with a hit to 178 Slim. TB50 Ginger Joey jacked 800 Romeo. PA388 Stevo McGrath guided his Scorpio to a faultless victory with first spoils going to The Predators.

Heat 2 saw J724 Trevor Burcham the first casualty as he was spun aside by TB41 Paul Pentecost. PB347 Rhys Barrow went in on the nose of Burcham which catapulted the latter towards the armco. PB671 Leo Moore spun TWTC362 Johnny James. The exit of turn 4 became congested, seeing WB209 Tom Waller, PWB195 Dave Forrest and others go onto the infield. TB831 Shane Fry rattled WB32 Callum Reed around the plating on the road bend, with TWTC181 Grant Doe collecting the latter. DB188 John Reeves jacked WB5 Max Hertzog, with DB51 James Licquorice also piling in on the latter. TB232 Justin Pollard was late to the party and ending up rattling into the side of Hertzog’s Scorpio which was now a decent wreck. TB369 Steve Nicholls and SBB3 Mitchell Finney tangled, seeing both go on to the centre. 41 Pentecost spun and was collected by WB327 Mick Maskell Jnr, with SBB04 Mikey Croft scattering the latter out of the way. TWTC328 Ben Nicholls spun PB83 Julian Grant. 188 Victor spun 04 Croft. 459 Blake Platts taking the win, and credit to 671 Leo Moore for recording a top ten finish in his maiden banger appearance.

TB521 Ashley Riley was the first to show in Heat 3, spinning BRCM262 Rob Bugler as DE353 Martin Mullins and TB43 Luke Maynard tangled. TWTD577 Alfie Lee turned PWA133 Ben Wyatt around. WA284 James Head and TWTD623 Ricky Hutton spun under pressure from 577 Fonzo. TWTD180 Mark Foster rattled sole Barton Boy 704 Connor Siddalls around the plating. 623 Tricky had a pop at 521 Ace Ash. 180 Sparky laid into TB121 Leo Riley, with WA222 Matty High tangling with the latter. 623 Tricky went in on Matty. 133 Werzal weighed in on 121 Big Show. 353 Mullins had a visit to the armco after a tangle with 2L World Champion WA348 Sonny Sherwood which left him open to a shot from 180 Sparky. 121 Big Show turned it around and met second placed PWA199 Jamie Wyatt on the nose. 521 Ace Ash weighed in on 623 Tricky, and was jacked in turn by 180 Sparky. 199 Bona responded with an attack on oppo to 121 Big Show, with the young Bear continuing the momentum to lay into 577 Fonzo on oppo. 133 Werzal weighed in for a stiff shot to 121 Big Show. Bona then tboned Big Show, as 252 Boogie raced to the win.

The fourth Heat started with 195 Grenade David having a pop at 83 JuJu. 671 Moore got his ‘welcome to Bangers’ courtesy of 277 Sideshow who bounced him around the turn 3 plating. 188 Victor went around courtesy of Grenade David and J335 Lee White. 277 Sideshow went in on the nose of Victor’s Roller, which left the former sat a treat for a shot from DB907 Cameron Bradford. PWB323 Deane Kelly weighed in on 335 Bulldog. AB604 Ross Cooper jacked 907 Specs. 188 Victor attacked TWTA625 Josh Gooch on oppo, with Gucci responding with an attack of his own to Victor. Gucci completed a lap before going in on Victor again. SBA459 Blake Platts tagged the back of TWTB760 Joey Reynolds’ 240 Estate sending him around. SBB281 Lewis Tingle spun 831 Wally. TWTA622 Garry Webb went in with a head on to The Bears driver. 369 Nicholls jacked Webb and was done in turn by 281 Tingle. TWTA62 Harvey Webb went in with a hit behind the door to Nicholls and 625 Gucci completed the barrage of hits with a heavy tbone to the Bears guest. Steve went thumbs down at this point providing with our first race stoppage. The restart was quiet, with 209 Tom Waller taking the victory.

It was a very calm start to Heat 5. WA284 James Head spun and was collected by 252 Boogie. 623 Tricky weighed in on TB141 Mark Freeman. TB706 Alfie Turner set about 623 Tricky. 262 Roona spun SBA199 Shaydy Gough, before Tricky attacked Turner on oppo. PC927 Carl Lindsay bounced BRCM440 Macauley Mills into Turner, with the latter copping more stick courtesy of a jacking from 243 Bodja. 623 Tricky attacked Turner on oppo, with the red flags then coming out for the latter. 100 Cock lead them away from the off, with 178 Slim and 180 Sparky in pursuit. 77 Aario sat waiting for Slim on turn 2 and the pair met in a solid head on. TWTB349 Michael Allard drove through 178 Slim to open a pathway through, before 180 Sparky attacked Aario on oppo having also got caught in the earlier onslaught. This sat Aario up a treat for a huge shot from TWTB360 Jack Reynolds. Aftermath revenge was swift as AA84 Will Cole homed in on Jackstar. 84 Alpaca completed a lap before going in on Jackstar again and was immediately done by PA648 Jamie Smith in turn. 623 Tricky weighed in on Smithy, before 100 Cock threw away the lead, and subsequent win with only half a lap to go, to leather Smithy also. 349 Allard slipped through and survived a last bend lunge from 388 Stevo to win the race to the line and take the chequered flag.

The sixth heat started with 41 Pentecost having an awful first lap, spinning teammate 162 Viking before crashing into the marker tyres at the end of the home straight on his own accord. 711 Chunk rode the plating due to mechanical issues leaving him open for a shot from 51 Licquorice. 362 Drifter spun 252 Mr Blobby. AB624 Liam Hide spun 62 Webb. TB232 Justin Pollard weighed in on 83 JuJu and was duly tboned by TWTC328 Ben Nichols. Nichols was then tboned himself by 604 Rossco. 209 Tombo punted in 624 Lossy Jnr, who then backed across the pack getting collected by 459 Platts. The raced quietened down for the final stages as 32 Callum Reed raced to the win. 625 Gucci having the last moment of the race homing in on 711 Chunk’s yank at the end of the home straight.

23 Sonny P spun 623 Tricky in the first piece of action of Heat 7. 121 Big Show turned it around and met 623 Tricky on the nose, with 321 Chatty Man jacking the TMT man. 199 Shaydy homed in on Chatty Man and then had his boot put up in turn by 333 Chaz who was spun into the Silver Boys driver by TWTB670 Max Eaton. 100 Cock homed in on 521 Ace Ash at the end of the back straight, whilst 43 Muttley Jnr went in on 670 The Man Jnr down the other end. 50 Ginger Joey was dumped into Ace Ash, with TWTB146 Dan Wigman delivering a solid hit to the young Bears guest which knocked him out and brought an immediate red flag out – Joey exiting under his own steam to the applause of the crowd. 284 Heady lead them away on the restart. 262 Roona spun 349 Allard. 243 Bodja attacked WA222 Matty High on oppo, with the latter getting spun aside by 333 Chaz half a lap later. 146 Wiggy dumped 348 Mushy into a tractor tyre. 222 Matty met 243 Bodja in a head on. 577 Lee jacked 222 Matty and was done in turn by 43 Muttley Jnr. 100 Cock weighed in on Muttley Jnr. BRCM took a clean sweep securing all top 4 placings with 262 Roona the winner.

The start to the final was chaotic with cars going in all directions. 04 Croft spun 347 Barrow along the home straight. 51 Licquorice weighed in on 195 Grenade David. 209 Tombo spun 388 Stevo. 188 Victor jacked 195 Grenade David. 199 Bona jacked Victor. 671 Moore spun 162 Viking. 32 Reedy Jnr rattled 360 Jackstar around the plating who kept the momentum to blast 199 Bona. 51 Licquorice weighed in on 360 Jackstar. 146 Wiggy spun PA585 Luke Holdsworth. 348 Mushy got spat fence-wards at the end of the back straight. 349 Allard spun 3 Finney. 252 Boogie spun 349 Allard. 440 Big Mac spun 760 Joey as BRCM clearly had their intentions set on securing the titles. 760 Joey lost a wheel down the back straight as 362 Drifter took out 262 Roona. Roona turned it on oppo and stopped the leading 327 Maskell Jnr on the last bend to allow 333 Chaz to sweep through and take the win securing the title for BRCM.

Into the DD, where 335 Bulldog laid into 243 Bodja. 178 Slim homed in on Bulldog at the end of the home straight. 243 Bodja set about 353 Mullins. 232 Waterboy ran 328 Nichols into 335 Bulldog. 199 Shaydy weighed in on 353 Mullins. 625 Gucci homed in on 178 Slim on oppo. 670 The Man Jnr attacked 232 Waterboy as 162 Viking spun 199 Shaydy. 353 Mullins and 335 Bulldog shared a head on before 162 Viking tboned 328 Nichols. 760 Joey went in on 232 Waterboy. 670 The Man Jnr jacked 291 Bell, which set him up for a shot from 625 Gucci resulting in Bell being in a TWT sandwich – Bell needing assistance so the red flags came out on track. The DD resumed with 243 Bodja attacking 625 Gucci. 232 Waterboy spent two laps trying to follow 760 Joey in, and resulted in dumping the latter into the marker tyres. Waterboy and Joey exchanged multiple hits before the latter got bored and blasted 670 The Man Jnr. The TWT pairing continuously laid into 232 Waterboy before the latter’s Mercedes set alight handing the win to 760 Joey to conclude proceedings.

A fantastic display of driving and teamwork from BRCM saw them take the title, with Dover Boys consistent crashing displays seeing them comfortably win the Entertainers standings. A great day of Unlimited Bangers at their best.
