Mildenhall – 7+8/5/22 – Kev Waller Memorial Weekend – Pre 70 & Pre 90 Unlimited Bangers – Meeting Report

The Kev Waller Memorial weekend was the most highly anticipated banger meeting of 2022, allowing drivers and fans alike to pay respects to a top gentleman, whilst also allowing the first real opportunity for the community to get together in a true social manner.

Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May were the dates that saw people ascend from all across Europe to Mildenhall Stadium. The vast array of top cars and paint highlighting the level of effort that went in behind the scenes.

The Saturday was in the ‘Spirit of Pre 70’, meaning Austin A60s, Ford Cortinas, Morris Oxfords, Triumph 2000s, Rover P6s and the like. 388 Stevo McGrath had the car of the meeting, and perhaps the year, with his Austin Cambridge Hearse. 476 Ross Coleman had a Mk4 Zephyr Hearse. A grand parade took place before the racing commenced on the Saturday, the drivers being lead out by 209 Tom Waller followed by sister 207 Laura. The emotions of the day clearly taking their toll, it was a very heartwarming parade with applause and cheers celebrating Kev’s life. 

Heat 1 was for the smaller cars. 383 Rory Adams came under fire from 821 Ryan Preston straight away. 3 Terry Peacock had a pop at 538 Curtis Salvage. 238 Jake Harris spun down the home straight in his Standard 8, probably the smallest car out on track. 724 Glen North duly tboned 238 Harris. 348 Lewis Saunders went in on 724 North. 266 Brad Wells jacked 375 Alex Hensby. 108 Lewis Jefcote spun 586 Martin Bristow, as 352 Stu Brooks set about 821 Dangerous on the back straight in the first moment of The Condoms v Damage Inc action. 352 Mr Bilge then rattled Dangerous off the armco, as 416 Aaron Clarke spun 724 North. 547 Tony McNeil spun 348 Saunders. 821 Dangerous and 352 Mr Bilge shared a head on which claimed a few others on the pits bend. 11 James Spriggs attacked 821 Dangerous which claimed 32 Callum Reed and 123 Kieron Gray. 252 Gareth Griffiths spun 11 Spriggs. 547 Babyface tboned 724 North. 561 Ben Payne spun 821 Dangerous. 818 Ben Collins had a pop at 547 Babyface. 818 Collins attacked 352 Mr Bilge, which spun 11 Spriggs in turn. Another all A60 heat for the fifth race of the day. 403 George Tickner spun 343 Lewis White from the off. Several drivers had a coming together along the home straight. 384 John Golden spun 885 Ash Henby. 216 Mark Burrows dispatched 730 Toby Webb into the marker tyres on the back straight, before 400 Georgie Kelly followed in 336 Nigel White. 242 Paul Korpiela and 444 Charlie Jackson crashed out on the pits bend alongside 730 Webba. 335 Lee White caught 611 Joe Geeves on oppo. 356 Harry Overy weighed in on 611 Geeves. 389 Deano McGrath and 336 White tangled on turn 1, which left the latter sat prone on the exit of turn 2. 383 Jeff Smith decimated 336 White. 356 Overy attacked 242 Korps on oppo. 885 Chimp and 343 White weighed in on 383 Smithy at the same time. The reds then came out on track. Heat 6 was an all Triumph affair; 207 Laura Waller making her debut on track. Brothers 913 Brett and 313 Craig Osborne were both first lap spinners. 25 Mark Thomas spun 585 Kevin Giles. 959 Aaron Keoghan buried 283 Louise Strudwick. 811 Pete Winter removed 704 Connor Siddalls. 276 Adam Rowell and 13 Bobby Palin crashed out on the entrance to the home straight. 179 Shaun Rushton weighed in on the spun 823 Jamie Murrell. 277 Sean Rowell jacked 823 Murrell, with 959 Keoghan delivering the same treatment. 160 Shayn Winsor spun 207 Laur aside, in her first taste of contact. 346 Scott Saunders dispatched 350 Ryan Yeo. 328 Dan Lathan spun 517 Sid Cooper. 309 Michael Lane followed in 25 Tombo; a nice tribute to the former’s late father who’s roof fin Laney was donning for the meeting – David never managing to get payback on Tombo for a hit. 346 Muttley spun 811 Pistol Pete. 5 Jeffrey Woolford weighed in on 309 Laney. 887 Rob Browning spun 160 Winsor. 887 Browning then spun 913 Brett. 350 Yogi Jnr jacked 25 Tombo and was leathered in turn by 811 Pistol Pete. 5 Jefferson jacked 13 Bobdog. 887 Browning clipped 13 Bobdog’s car sending him off-course and losing loads of ground as the former sat among the front-runners prior to that. Heat 7, or the ‘larger car heat’ saw cars like 476 Rosco’s Zephyr Hearse, 523 John Swanborough’s Laurel and 113 Tony Gillepsie’s Humber take to the track. Rosco was an early casualty, crashing out with 158 Shane Davies along the home straight. 340 Will Brazier jacked 931 Rick Humphrey. 476 Rosco stopped 291 Mick Turner on the nose. 624 Cameron Hubbard weighed in on 291 Turner in turn. 814 Mark Millen dumped 113 Gillespie aside on the home straight. 164 Timon Van Lenthe jacked 931 Humphrey. 476 Rosco went in on 164 Timon and was splintered in turn by 340 Willy. 10 James Eaton jacked 340 Willy. 426 Austin Burns turned 18 Jason Anslow into 476 Rosco’s Hearse which took it’s roof off. 360 Jack Reynolds, 173 Steve Reynolds and 203 Darren Nash shared a cool moment, drifting their Rover P4s in unison around turns 3 and 4. A jacking train in Heat 7 left 476 Ross Coleman’s Zephyr Hearse a bit worse for wear

With the heats all finished, it was the turn of Consolation 1. 821 Dangerous spun 243 Pete Osborne. 824 Ollie Millen rattled a series of cars around the pit bend wall, before getting stuck with 584 Kimberley French. 611 Geeves jacked 824 Millen, with 292 Paul Davies also weighing in. 356 Overy spun 03 Scott Russell which rolled the latter. Drivers piled in on the pits bend; there must have been at least 20 cars sat in the chaos as the red flags came out, but not before 538 Curtis Salvage jacked 141 Gary Lee. The racing concluded with an after party in the main bar which was a superb social. Harry Catterall providing post-race entertainment smashing the life out of a bin with a bicycle, complete with added ‘traffic cone’ roof fin.

The Sunday saw a Pre 90 Unlimited format, with 388 Stevo having the star car once again with his Jaguar XJ6-TwentySix. There was an outbreak of Japanese material also, including 439 Daniel Sutton’s pillarless Y30 Nissan Cedric. There was also several big Yanks, 328 Daniel Lathan’s Mk1 Cadillac Coupe de Ville standing out amongst the others. Heat 2 featured some of the top tin with 388 Stevo McGrath on track in his Jaguar XJ Twenty Six. 673 Darren Fendley spun 312 Tom Reynolds. 169 James Rushton spun 439 Daniel Sutton, the latter then copping a savage tbone from 331 Jason Jackson. 181 Grant Doe spun 673 Fendley aside, as 215 Leonard Dunn and 99 Jonny Rutterford tangled along the home straight. 388 Little Stevo buried 348 Sonny Sherwood into the back of 331 Boxer Jack. 77 Russell Gill and 312 Turbo Tom shared a head on down on the pits bend. 181 Doe jacked 77 Jack. 455 Ricki Finney spun 103 Jack Deacon. The red flags then coming out to assist 439 Sutty. The restart saw 757 Callum Gill spin 341 Andrew Jones. 277 Sean Rowell laid into 348 Mushy. 215 Murph attacked 148 Mark Hughes, which also spun 190 Steve Bailey in turn. 173 Steve Reynolds homed in for a head on to 215 Murph, as 388 Little Stevo jacked 103 Jacko. 190 Pikey stopped 363 Sam Trim with a stiff head on. 673 Fendley weighed in on 363 Trummer. 77 Jack weighed in and was immediately pummelled by 277 Sideshow, as more steamed in behind. 455 Finney delivered a head on to the spun 757 Jack Jnr, as 281 Lewis Tingle was removed by 242 Ricky Korpiela. 190 Pikey attacked 215 Murph on oppo. 341 Jonesey weighed in on 215 Murph, with 148 Hughes laying into Jonesey. 341 Jonesey completed a lap before delivering a head on to 77 Jack. 195 Reece Marsh spat 341 Jonesey fence-wards, the latter then deciding to bomb down the home straight to jack 277 Sideshow. 757 Jack Jnr went in oppo on 277 Sideshow and was done by 341 Jonesey. 190 Pikey steamed into the pile up for a head on to 277 Sideshow. 341 Jonesey drove through 281 Tingle. 114 Liam Lake drove through 195 Dipper. 215 Murph steamed in on 148 Hughes. 455 Finney jacked 757 Jack Jnr on oppo. 169 Rushton homed in to leather 215 Murph, as 114 Liam Lake guided his Crown to the win.

824 Ollie Millen rattled the barrier early doors of Heat 3. 131 Peter Hamner ran 107 Josh Gent and 354 Thomas Clark into the armco on turn 1, as 433 Bounce Carter spun 420 Patrick Hoes. 107 Gent removed 354 Them. 240 Rob Setters laid into 433 Carter, setting the latter up for a jacking from 99 David Spooner. 208 Kieran Bennett piled 390 Dan Stacey into 433 Carter. 123 Kieran Grey set about 323 Dean Kelly, before 99 Bam blitzed 390 Dazza. Bam then delivered a head on to the spun 46 Scott Starkey, and was then duly spun by 959 Aaron Keoghan. 313 Craig Osborne spun 46 Starkey, right into the pathway of the incoming 99 Bam. 240 Shep removed 959 Keoghan, whilst on the back straight, 639 Tye Williams attacked 313 Oz-Cut and 107 Gent which saw Tye drop out of the running momentarily. 204 Charlie King and 107 Gent spun in unison. 240 Rob Setters raced to the victory.

920 James Medley was the first to show spinning 178 Kieran Bowman at the start of Heat 4. 617 Jack Overy spun 113 Dan Wright. 440 Macauley Mills went spinning courtesy of 739 Jason Moore. 178 Slim had a pop at 440 Big Mac. 592 Mark Marchant had 291 Turner around. 67 Rickie Beasley turned 960 Ross Winsor aside. 333 Dan Weavers spun 291 Mick Turner. 141 Dan Steele drove into 291 Turner. 356 Harry Overy endured a terrible lap, firstly getting spun before 89 Joe Barrett ran 23 Bernie French into his driver’s door. 440 Lennon Phillips homed in for a solid head on to 356 Overy, who was also tboned in turn by 178 Slim. 739 Meerkat made matters worse for his teammate, running into him at pace. 384 John Golden jacked 178 Slim on the entrance of turn 1. 384 Goldie and 67 Beasley took it in turns to leather 178 Slim down the back straight. 89 Panda laid into 291 Turner. 920 James Medley the winner this time around. 333 Cuddles drove through 291 Turner before the reds came out.

The fifth heat begun with 41 Lee Barnes spinning 4 David Wilde. 133 Terry Hill removed 160 Shayn Winsor. 146 Davey O’Connor and 126 Steve Austin spun in sync on the pits bend. 108 Lewis Jefcote steamed into 126 Austin on oppo. 4 Wildy then drove through 108 Squeaky. 41 Looney Lee rattled the Cadillac Coupe De Ville of 328 Dan Lathan in on the pits bend. 681 Tom Dickson got dumped into the marker tyres on turn 1. 4 Wildy spun 241 Jack Broughton. 328 Lathan met the lurking 108 Squeaky on the nose, as 382 Jack Foster Jnr moved in to spin the leading 510 Daniel Newman. 328 Lathan and 382 Chubby got stuck together, running into 108 Squeaky. The next couple of laps were quiet until 170 Chris Shipp attacked 146 Davey on oppo. 382 Chubby was the next to administer an oppo hit, with 405 Shane Tilley his victim. 577 Alfie Lee tboned 4 Wildy on oppo with 510 Newman crashing in. Newman backed out nearly stopping 133 Terz just before the line, but the latter came through to take the chequered flag. Behind, 41 Looney Lee blasted 577 Fonzo on oppo, and 328 Lathan drove into 510 Newman. 382 Chubby then caged Newman, with 681 Small Dick and race winner 133 Terz coming together near the start line. 405 Rudey ending the action by driving through 41 Looney Lee, and then 382 Chubby on the red flags.

The final heat saw 165 Ben Randell the first casualty as he was spun aside by 156 Mick Maskell. 181 Doe spun 156 Maskell before 239 Steve Carter set about 43 Luke Maynard. 523 John Swanborough and 583 Dan Weeks spun on turn 2. 181 Doe spun 239 Nemesis aside. 321 Kieron Fry backed 156 Maskell into the armco, with 181 Doe game to jack the 156 Mk2 Granada. 327 Mick Maskell Jnr was on hand to back up his father, weighing in on 181 Doe. 555 Harry Gelsthorp jacked 327 Little Legs. 583 Weeksy homed in on 555 Dirty Harry. 146 Dan Wingman also going in on the back of Weeksy. 40 Lester Freestone then delivered a textbook follow in to 49 Blake Macdowell before joining the jacking train as the five lap board was displayed to 622 Garry Webb. 523 Swampy jacked 40 Lester before 321 Chatty Man connected with a solid hit on oppo to 239 Nemesis, which resulted with the Bears man getting straddled on the grass bank. 239 Nemesis completed a lap before driving through 321 Chatty Man. 622 Garry Webb raced to the win, as 239 Nemesis went flying down the home straight on oppo, unfortunately not resulting in anything as the red flags came out before he got the opportunity.

It was the turn of the Consolation races. The first of which starting with 941 Jimmy Matthews spinning 710 Rugrat Jnr. 313 Oz-Cut followed in Peter Hoes. 702 Jimbo turned 67 Beasley fence-wards. 331 Boxer Jack stopped 702 Jimbo on oppo, with 460 Clifford Friend driving through the latter. 208 Barry attacked 702 Jimbo and 460 Big Dog on oppo. 208 Barry continued to get stuck in, driving into 182 Reece Tingle on oppo. 16 Jack Wheatley came off the infield to drive into 281 Lewis Tingle on oppo as the reds came out. The reds had been out a while before 281 Tingle homed in on 16 Jackal Jnr. 169 Rushton lead on the restart, which saw 190 Pikey chose to turn it oppo straight away. Pikey flew down the home straight to deliver a head on to 313 Oz-Cut. 941 Matthews piled into Oz-Cut to try and open a gap through the pile up. 190 Pikey again flew down the home straight on oppo, connecting with 67 Beasley on the exit of turn 4. 169 Rushton piled into 67 Beasley. 420 Hoes jacked 183 Mitch Banton. 67 Beasley steamed in on 169 Rushton. 817 Stig took a couple of heavy shots from 313 Oz-Cut and 190 Pikey in turn. 941 Jimmy Matthews took the victory , as 183 Banton spun into 313 Oz-Cut and was collected by 67 Beasley. Beasley then turning it around to deliver a front wheel shot to 183 Banton, as 313 Oz-Cut and 190 Pikey concluded the action meeting in another head on.

440 Big Mac spun 107 Gent on the pits bend, as 199 Bona turned 354 Them fence-wards at the end of the home straight as the action got underway thick and fast for Consolation 2. 197 Joe Bowers spun 384 Goldie. 321 Chatty Man and 141 Steele tangled. 209 Tombo weighed in on 321 Chatty Man. 215 Murph ladies into 321 Chatty Man, setting himself up to be wasted by 195 Dipper. 99 Rutterford spun 170 Conor Finnegan, before collecting 195 Dipper. 133 Werzal made sure 215 Murph was finished for the day, as 209 Tombo drove through 141 Steele and 107 Gent on oppo. 276 Adam Rowell drove through 209 Tombo. 298 Showman weighed in on 107 Gent. 133 Werzal drove through 99 Bam. 199 Bona tboned 209 Tombo on oppo. 141 Steele attacked 209 Tombo, and was then met on the nose by 133 Werzal. 298 Showman jacked 141 Steele in a huge shot which fully kicked the action off. 99 Rutterford home in as 681 Small Dick and 135 Jamie Batchelor weighed into the pile up on oppo. 99 Bam attacked 135 Spuddy. 276 Rowell set about 440 Big Mac before 195 Dipper weighed in on 388 Little Stevo. 823 Jamie Murrell connected with 99 Bam. 195 Dipper laid into 141 Steele. 209 Tombo jacked 298 Showman. 195 Dipper completed a lap before homing in on 209 Tombo. 99 Bam lamely went in on 195 Dipper as he tried to get the yank into some momentum. With no one else running, the race was awarded to 99 David Spooner who was the last car running.

The last Consolation race saw 801 Mason Foster spin on the first bend from the head of the grid which caused chaos behind. 178 Slim connected with 4 Wildy on oppo. 89 Panda jacked 4 Wildy, as 525 Andrews leathered 178 Slim on oppo. 181 Doe planted himself into 4 Wildy. 89 Panda attacked 525 Andrews on oppo. The reds then coming out on track. 628 Mark Hutton lead them off on the restart. 449 Bill Critt attacked 146 Wiggy on oppo which also claimed 239 Nemesis. A few quiet laps passed before 960 Rossco buried 241 Broughton. 46 Starkey jacked 241 Broughton. 181 Doe leathered 46 Starkey, as 628 Mark Hutton guided his Hearse to the win.

Alcomers 1 saw all non-qualifiers back on track. 143 Daniel Rose spun 182 Tingle. 331 Boxer Jack launched himself over the grass bank in an attempt to land a shot on 440 Big Mac. A few laps passed before 331 Boxer Jack and 440 Big Mac shared a head on. 420 Hoes piled 190 Pikey into 440 Big Mac. 313 Oz-Cut homed in for a head on to 190 Pikey. 143 Rose weighed in on 313 Oz-Cut, as 702 Jimbo steamed into 190 Pikey. 169 Rushton slammed into 702 Jimbo. 276 Rowell set about 440 Big Mac before 40 Lester jacked 143 Rose. 440 Big Mac weighed in on 331 Boxer Jack on oppo. 276 Rowell then drove through Boxer Jack as 313 Oz-Cut delivered another solid head on to 190 Pikey. 182 Tingle jacked 313 Oz-Cut. 169 Rushton attacked 49 Macdougall on oppo. 420 Hoes weighed in on 182 Tingle. 331 Boxer Jack weighed in on 440 Big Mac on oppo. 169 Rushton jacked 702 Jimbo on oppo as Boxer again steamed into 440 Big Mac. 420 Hoes pummelled 182 Tingle, whilst 384 Goldie circulated avoiding all the action. 169 Rushton stopped 113 Wrighty head on. 190 Pikey and 420 Hoes shared head ons. 169 Rushton jacked 190 Pikey on oppo as the reds came out for a fire on 331 Boxer Jack’s Roller. 384 John Golden being deemed the winner.

It was Final time out on the raceway. The grid packed with talent. 348 Mushy was the first to fall foul getting spun by 592 Marchant. A push into the pits bend left 146 Davey facing the wrong direction. 133 Terz dumped 146 Wiggy fence-wards. 99 Bam parked up on the pits bend to back out on the pack, catching 526 Jak D well. 146 Wiggy piled into 526 Jak D. 318 Darrell Page spun 323 Deano into 99 Bam. 542 Oliver spun 456 Nathan Roberts. 542 Oliver and 328 Lathan then met in a head on. 240 Setters followed in 67 Beasley. 99 Bam attacked 146 Davey on oppo. 941 Jimmy clobbered 146 Davey, the latter flooring it to blast 628 Hutton on oppo. 317 Stress weighed in on 628 Hutton. 592 Marchant turned it around to jack 146 Davey, as 114 Lakey set about 323 Deano. 617 Overy delivered a head on to 628 Hutton. 328 Lathan did a lap on oppo in search of 542 Oliver but couldn’t find a gap to administer a hit. 523 Swampy weighed into 328 Lathan. 197 Stanley went in on 523 Swampy. 288 Carl Sowter raced to the win from 455 Ricki Finney and 133 Terry Hill. 328 Lathan and 542 Oliver finding one another with a pair of solid head ons. 523 Swampy, 941 Jimmy, 455 Finney and 592 Marchant all steaming into the action as the red flags came out, but not before 617 Overy jacked 941 Jimmy and 542 Oliver drove through 328 Lathan on oppo.

The second Alcomers race saw a bumper field of cars as drivers looked to cap off a superb weekend. As the green flag dropped, it was nearly nose to tail from the front to the back. Lots piled in on the pits bend as 384 Goldie jacked 107 Gent down the home straight. 181 Doe buried 97 Dave Allen, who got lodged on 169 Rushton’s bonnet and eventually rolled bringing an early stoppage. The race got back underway with several drivers already retiring to the infield. 114 Lakey buried 844 Hoes. 182 Tingle jacked 844 Hoes and was done in turn by 449 Critt. The leading 204 Charlie Boy decided to through it away to leather 449 Critt. 523 Swampy buried 592 Marchant, the latter keeping it nailed to jack 204 Charlie Boy. 89 Panda splinted 592 Marchant. 523 Swampy followed 288 Sowter into 204 Charlie Boy’s door. 169 Rushton delivered a superb hit to 523 Swampy. 555 Dirty Harry homed in on 169 Rushton and was duly leathered in turn by 239 Nemesis. 523 Swampy jacked 555 Dirty Harry and was done in turn by 710 Rugrat Jnr. 617 Overy went in on 710 Rugrat Jnr. 239 Nemesis pushed 617 Overy aside before 135 Spuddy connected with a hit on oppo to 318 Pagey. 97 Alge and 617 Overy laid into 318 Pagey. 239 Nemesis went in on 97 Alge. 89 Panda drove through 239 Nemesis. 617 Overy jacked 41 Looney Lee on oppo as 577 Fonzo run 318 Pagey in. 455 Finney wasted the lead to splinter Pagey’s hearse which handed the lead to 114 Lakey. 89 Panda piled into 710 Rugrat Jnr. 114 Liam Lake rounded the weekend off with another win, as 617 Overy jacked 49 Macdougall on oppo.

Into the DD, where 384 Goldie attacked 317 Stress. 920 Medley put the boot up on 327 Little Legs’ Mk2. 617 Overy went in on the nose of 327 Little Legs. 97 Alge weighed in on 317 Stress. 114 Lakey set about 323 Deano, the latter responding with a head on. 920 Medley delivered a solid hit to 97 Alge and copped one himself from 384 Goldie. 97 Alge tboned 920 Medley. 617 Overy went in on the nose of 405 Rudey as 97 Alge attacked 114 Lakey. It was a Team Black trio to settle the honours. They took a momentary break as the OrangeArmy treated a fire on 323 Deano’s car. 97 Alge and 617 Overy weighed in on 384 Goldie as 67 Beasley got going again not wanting to be left out. He drove into 384 Goldie as 97 Alge attacked 617 Overy. The four members delivered several hits to one another, before 384 Goldie outlasted them all to take the victory. 

Another superb day of action, reminiscent of old Suffolk Opens gone by. A real treat for all and cemented how good of a weekend it had been to reward the hard work that had gone on behind the scenes.
