Unlimited Bangers Championship of the World – 07/10/2017 – Ipswich

The 45th staging of the Unlimited Banger Championship of the World took place at Foxhall Stadium on Saturday 7th October with a record attendance of 263 cars. The impressive list of machinery can be seen below, but stand out motors included the 2-door Mk1 Ford Granadas of 186 Sophie Fasey and 331 Jason Jackson where attention to detail was second to none. 787 Marc Key had a Mk1 Granada too whilst DWO pairing 341 Andy Jones and 838 Jamie Peters had a pair of smart Rolls Royce Silver Spirits. 589 Simon Smith had a unique Bentley Mulsanne. 77 Patxi Beasley had a smart Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. 211 Dennis Vorkink had a cool Volvo 245 Transfer. There was a pair of yanks as 72 Billy Bond had a Ford Country Squire and 241 Paul Korpiela had an impressive Cadillac Fleetwood Limo. 246 Aston Burt rolled in with an impressive Daimler XJ Hearse which certainly turned heads.

The first Last Chance Qualifier of the evening raised 45 cars, as the drivers were brought onto the track by the pace cars. The race commenced with 57 Joe Boy spinning 258 Donny fencewards. 199 Tomo took out 160 Windsor, as 195 Grenade Dave blasted 352 Mynott. 294 Stuntman delivered a head on to the spun 548 Big Al. 57 Joe Boy and 410 Calvert tangled down the home straight, leaving the latter prone to a shot from the big limo of 389 Lump. 77 Patxi stopped 427 Deano with a well timed on oppo attack. 523 Swampy blasted 427 Deano with an oppo attack, allowing 67 Beasley to jack the latter. 601 Usha ran head on into 410 Calvert, as 11 Janssen followed in 389 Lump, as the race was brought to a halt to attend to 427 Deano. 800 Romeo headed the charge from 103 Jacko and 94 Little Dreamer. The restart saw 123 The Traveller spat out of contention by 205 Five Eyes. 133 Werzal wiped out 548 Big Al and 222 Matty in one sweep. 269 Deano blasted 211 Mr Nos. 523 Swampy met 133 Werzal met in a heavy head on.199 Tomo jacked 133 Werzal. 77 Patxi stopped 425 Big Mac’s charge, with the latter spinning off onto the shale. 160 Winsor spun 103 Jacko for second. 548 Big Al turned it around a met 294 Stuntman in a stinking head on. 77 Patxi blasted 294 Stuntman as he looked to rejoin. 294 Stuntman spun round to jack 548 Big Al on oppo, before completing a lap to jack the latter once again. 294 Stuntman continued his romp by spinning 123 The Traveller. 67 Beasley gave a head on to 425 Big Mac, before stopping the leading 800 Romeo in a reverse attack.294 Stuntman spun 28 Super Cooper. 77 Patxi dished a head on to 87 Damo. 294 Stuntman jacked 28 Super Cooper. 199 Tomo delivered a head on to 274 Leadfoot, who responded with a tbone to the former a lap later. 760 Joey lost a wheel which brought the red and chequered out as 181 Grant Doe raced to the biggest win of his career taking the World Final spot.

Last Chance 2 raised 44 cars with 171 Westy Jnr burying 245 France from the off. 72 Bondage attacked 174 Whipper and 28 Jamesy sending them both spinning. 468 Quinnell removed the recovering 28 Jamesy. 577 Lee followed in 322 Foxy hard on the scoreboard bend. 542 Oliver attacked 814 Millen, getting tangled on the latter leaving him prone to a shot from 106 Stevenson. The red flags came out for 322 Foxy who was slightly shaken. The restart placed 725 Sibbs at the head of the charge from 648 Smithy and 433 Smith.532 Walsh buried 125 Rodney, as 814 Millen continued his Glad hunt by tboning 612 Loadsey. 174 Whipper responded by jacking 814 Millen. 349 Noddy tboned the spun 281 Tingle. 333 Chaz destroyed 125 Rodney and impressively managed to retain his momentum and position too! 468 Quinell ran in 182 Mad Mike. 589 Gonna dished a head on to 28 Jamesy. 128 Shippy went on oppo to tbone 589 Gonna, only to receive a mean head on from 349 Noddy in turn. 174 Whipper jacked 28 Jamesy. 171 Westy Jnr rattled in 245 France for the second time. 72 Bondage absolutely destroyed 725 Sibbs with a solid shot. The Glads combined to stop 14 Perisco. 100 Cock met 884 Tom on the snout. 433 Ben Smith crossed the line to take the chequered flag, however, he had been docked for jumping the shale, promoting 648 Smithy for the win. The latter receiving a head on from 589 Gonna as the red flags came out.

Last Chance 3 started with 662 Dalts collecting the spun 468 Quinnell. 160 Warr jacked 662 Dalts. 211 Poley went in on 662 Dalts. 777 Vorkink buried 517 Sidders into the growing pile up. The race was stopped for 662 Dalts who had copped one in the door in all the carnage. A complete restart ensued. 32 Podge spun 837 Wes from the off. 602 Mr Moody blitzed the sat up 205 Gava. 74 Scratchy got buried into the door of the already wrecked 205 Gava. 61 Reidy jacked 74 Scratchy. 278 Bean spun 399 Jonny and 200 Noon delivered the same treatment to 228 Beasley. 200 Noon punted on team-mate 154 Willis, who sailed straight into the drivers door of 205 Gava bringing an instant red out to check on the latter. 205 Gava exited after a while and needed medical treatment; we wish him well! The restart saw 190 Pikey head 528 Jethro and teammate 239 Nemesis. Grey and Black rival 843 Foster was lurking on the exit of the scoreboard bend. The latter stopping 528 Jethro going for 190 Pikey. A lap later 190 Pikey accepted his fate and steamed in to meet the lurking 843 Foster on the nose. 241 Cracknell jacked 190 Pikey, while 362 Drifter spun 239 Nemesis to take up the lead. The spun 141 Steele was done head on by 348 Mushy, as 801 Mason came off the shale to jack 190 Pikey. The race was paused for 190 Pikey to exit his vehicle. The restart saw 382 Hutchings follow in 241 Cracknell, before going on to jack 442 Fat Pants. 455 Finney sealed his fate by taking a strong win.

The Last Chance 4 raised 55 cars, although 388 Little Stevo, 710 Nipper and 551 Jackson failed to make the start. 842 Perkins jacked 772 Noble, whilst a pile up formed on the turnstiles bend. 466 Dalton blasted the recovering 33 Doyle. 402 Callard spun 702 Jimbo, as 920 Churchy jacked 33 Doyle. 883 Filmer done 702 Jimbo head on, as 783 Strud weighed in on 883 Filmer. 36 Mr Misfit jacked 783 Strud, only to have 733 Stroud home in on him. 232 Stewart done 33 Doyle head on as the red flags came out. A complete restart was ordered. 488 Ziggy jacked 339 Jackpot. 208 PJ spat 27 Telbert aside for the lead. 196 Joey caught 339 Jackpot in the door as the latter attempted to take out 514 Marty. 106 The Cheat weighed in on 196 Joey. 514 Marty responded by dishing a front wheel shot on 339 Jackpot.122 Cooper Jnr spun 194 Cecil, who bounced back to attack 75 Cordery, as 198 Ozzie Jnr took a great win.

The World Championship race was next and defending champion 27 Dale Hughes was led out by the steel band. After drawing grid position 53, Spedeworth Points Champion 209 Tom Waller was brought out and presented with his trophy for winning the points. Tombo pulled 30th on the grid, before the rest of the qualifiers were brought out to draw their numbers. 331 Boxer Jack came out to a very mixed reception which was all taken in good jest bar the small minority of the crowd that thought it was acceptable to throw beer cans at Jason, and we hope they are dealt with in the correct manner. Boxer pulled 26 on the grid, while Irish men 59 Leadfoot and 215 Leonard pulled second and fourth out the hat. Spedeworth had honoured the superb gesture of leaving pole free for the late 206 Kingy. Other tipped favourites for the title saw 570 Dino Jnr (10), 114 Lakey (18), 617 Overy (19), 516 Gouldy (23) on the front half of the grid. 247 Bro pulled 33rd on the grid, but with rival 341 Jonesy only two rows behind him (37), he had to ensure a good start. Other interesting placings saw 262 Roona placed a row behind 331 Boxer (27), while 162 Bad Boy (46) and 180 Sparky (45) were alongside one another. The full grid for the main race was as below:

Following footage obtained by Spedeworth the result was once again changed, declaring 59 Steven Bolton as the 2017 World Champion, 114 Liam Lake second, 455 Ricki Finney third and 143 Dan Rose fourth.

A pile up ensued. 241 Korpiela jacked 205 Five Eyes. 648 Smithy weighed in on 241 Korpiela. The red and chequers came out with only a couple running and struggling to get through the pile up, and with the curfew fast approaching, 211 Poley was declared the winner.

Overall a superb World Final full of brilliant machinery and paint jobs and some great on track action, although unfortunately the events of the World Championship result may have overshadowed the events of the meeting more.
