The fifth annual Bears Big Bash took place on Saturday 8th July in front of a massive crowd with superb weather conditions with the aim of raising plenty of funds for the Rockinghorse Foundation. Just over 110 cars rolled into the pits with some impressive machinery on display. The Bears own 521 Ace Ash had one of the cars of the meeting with a lush Datsun 280c Estate. The Posh Wash team typically impressed with 186 Mike Pullen boasting a smart Mk1 Granada, with team mates 133 Werzal and 230 Muttley boasted a pair of smart Mk2 Granadas. 403 The Pie wielded a Daimler DS420 limo, and 274 Leadfoot sported a fresh Nissan 300c, while 439 Sutty brought a used version. 384 Bad Boy Liam brought a used a Mk1 Granada and 583 Weeksy a used Mk2 Granada Limo. There were another 3 limos on display, as 17 Chief brought a Ford Fairline Limo, 43 Muttley Jnr and 333 Wickson had Mk3 Granada versions while 325 Wicko chose a Mk2 Granada Hearse as his weapon. The Bears brought some further tin; 41 Balu brought a smart Daimler Conquest, while 321 Chatty Man and 421 Nutty Nige had a pair of Rover P5’s. 243 Flatpack had a tidy Mk2 Estate. The King family impressed with a Cadillac Seville for 204 Charlie Boy, a Ford LTD for 206 Kingy and a baby yank for 205 Gava. The rest of the field was mainly made up of Toyota Previa’s, Mercedes C/E Class’, Lexus 400’s and Vauxhall Omega’s. 

After a grand parade and some crowd warming up courtesy of Nutty Nige, the cars for Heat 1. 20 cars gathered for the race sponsored by Newhaven Trade Centre and Stewart Finnie Haulage. 205 Gava started the action by spinning 24 Sticks. 206 Kingy buried 278 Ace Man. 24 Sticks spun 206 Kingy. 403 The Pie jacked 278 Ace Man. 204 Charlie Boy went in on 41 Balu bringing them to a halt under the starter rostrum. 24 Sticks jacked 204 Charlie Boy which triggered the first jacking train of the day. 521 Ace Ash destroyed 24 Sticks, 186 Pullen jacked 521 Ace Ash before being leathered by 274 Leadfoot. 43 Muttley Jnr ruined 274 Leadfoot before being jacked by 133 Werzal. 206 Kingy drove through the back end of 278 Ace Man. 421 Nutty Nige destroyed 133 Werzal which further snapped 274 Leadfoot. 206 Kingy snapped 421 Nutty Nige as 274 Leadfoot called for the reds in his increasing snapping 300c; not before 321 Chatty Man blasted 206 Kingy. Only two drivers survived the 3 minute crash fest; 583 Weeksy being deemed the winner ahead of 439 Sutty.

The S Byrne Grab Services and C & C Executive Cars sponsored Heat 2 raised a slightly better 26 cars. A pile up occurred on the pits bend, which saw 932 Little Reedy weigh in on 522 Weevil. 58 Joe Boy splintered long distance traveller 56 Vincky with a rear wheel shot. 260 Keefy attacked 556 Flip. The reds came out to assist 56 Vincky, who exited ok after a few moments. The restart saw 232 Waterboy backed across the pits bend into 42 Roachy, stopping the leading 760 Joey in the process. A few more cars piled in. 113 Swampy delivered a huge jacking on 102 Bokie. 58 Joe Boy buried 102 Bokie, with 221 Motormouth jacking 58 Joe Boy. 194 Cecil went in on 221 Motormouth, as 757 T-Boy won and jacked 232 Waterboy and 58 Joe Boy to celebrate. 760 Joey recovered to finish second ahead of 194 Cecil.

Heat 3 raised 27 cars, sponsored by Nigel Weeks Car Repairs and Freshwater Estates. 424 Wizard followed in 007 Badger and 3 Challenger, the former getting tangled up only to be jacked by 199 Bona. 679 Mr Bean went in on 3 Challenger. 198 Ozzie Jnr stuffed in 265. 333 Chaz destroyed 424 Wizard. 198 Ozzie Jnr spun 94 Cecil Jnr. 56 Siddo destroyed 679 Mr Bean. 831 Wally jacked 56 Siddo big time, with 172 Bernie jacking 831 Wally. 198 Ozzie Jnr raced to a solid win on his return meeting back from his unfortunate crash at Shamereck. 381 Joyce’s and 323 Kelly his placemen.

The M Blake Landscaping and Bounce About (Sussex) backed Heat 4 raised 29 cars. 471 Clarky stuffed away 229 Jarvis 746 Jarvis stuffed in 739 Swifty, before being jacked by 266 Drippy. 266 Drippy was blasted in turn with a revenge shot from 229 Jarvis. 28 Ozzie delivered a roof bender on 229 Jarvis, as 471 Clarky rolled at the end of the home straight. The reds came out to check on 471 Clarky and 266 Drippy, the latter being slightly shaken. The restart saw leading 982 Milky home in on the lurking 28 Ozzie. 702 Jimbo went in on 982 Milky, as 266 Odd Job dispatched 528 Jethro. 528 Jethro rejoined to spin 706 Rin-Tin. 28 Ozzzie jacked 2 Bricknell 751 Wells attacked 28 Ozzie. 528 Jethro tboned 751 Wells, before being jacked by 266 Odd Job. 266 Odd Job again set about 528 Jethro who done an impressive job of avoiding the spin for a lap and a half.706 Rin Tin caught the lame 739 Swifty before being weighed in on 182 Mad Mike.245 France went in, with 266 Odd Job jacking the latter. 528 Jethro lamely done 266 Odd Job, who went on to take the win.

With a change to the scheduled format, 33 cars assembled for the Pentagon Mercedes Benz and Just Electrical supported Final. 44 Trouble was the first to show as he buried 278 Ace-Man, who duly jacked in turn by Heat winner 198 Ozzie Jnr. A pile up formed on the back straight which involved 204 Charlie Boy, 384 Bad Boy Liam and 232 Waterboy, the latter taking a massive wreck. 133 Karly dispatched 632 Reedy Jnr as the race was brought to a stop to check on 278 Ace-Man. The restart saw 403 The Pie lengthen 43 Muttley Jnr who had conked out at the end of the home straight. 760 Joey followed in 205 Gava, as 198 Ozzie Jnr followed in 323 Kelly and 439 Sutty, taking the aforementioned 760 Joey in hard too. 42 Roachy jacked 439 Sutty and 632 Reedy Jnr tboned 323 Kelly. 932 Little Reedy delivered a solid head on to 760 Joey. 221 Motormouth went in on 323 Kelly, 715 Padbury jacked 221 Motormouth. Bears revenge was swift as 133 Karly weighed in on 715 Padbury. 583 Weeksy jacked 133 Karly, and 194 Cecil completed the train. 146 Vossy treated 439 Sutty to a head on, leaving himself prone to an attack from 321 Chatty Man. This freed up 439 Sutty, who emerged to blast 321 Chatty Man, with the red and chequers being brought out due to no more runners. 133 Karly being declared the winner taking another one home for the Bears; 198 Ozzie and 194 Cecil his placemen.

The first alcomers boasted a grid of 31 cars, although 679 Mr Bean failed to make the start. 333 Chaz followed in 831 Wally from the start, and 831 Wally took another shot from Posh Wash with a head on from 230 Muttley. Bears revenge was swift as 711 Churchy jacked 230 Muttley. 199 Bona jacked 41 Balu. 199 Bona continued his Bear hunt by destroying 831 Wally. 113 Swampy rattled in 199 Bona, as 172 Bernie ran 521 Ace Ash into 115 Garrett on the middle. 622 Stuie set about 260 Keefy. 421 Nutty Nige and 327 Suicide Syd clashed, 327 Syd being spun aside and rolling on the entrance of the pits bend. 260 Keefy moved in to protect the rolled 327 Suicide Syd. 757 T-Boy stuck in to 421 Nutty Nige, as 172 Bernie went in for a last bend lunge on 102 Bokie to snatch the win, with an impressive previa top two.

The second alcomers attracted 32 cars. 103 Foreskin assaulted 204 Charlie Boy, who went in on 
266 Odd Job attacked 583 Weeksy, as 17 Chiefy homed in to jack 204 Charlie Boy. 31 Bobcat jacked 17 Chiefy, before being blitzed in turn by 364 Nath. 103 Foreskin jacked 31 Bobcat, as 266 Odd Job blitzed 746 Jarvis. The red flags came out to assist the shaken 31 Bobcat. The restart saw 198 Ozzie Jnr spin 664 Joey who copped a big tbone in turn from 364 Nath. The lively 364 Nath then treated 16 Fagass to a head on. 757 T-Boy delivered similar treatment to 521 Ace Ash. 528 Jethro jacked 757 T-Boy. 421 Nutty Nige went in on 528 Jethro, as 664 Joey attacked 103 Foreskin. The leading 556 Flip got held up by the lurking 664 Joey. 198 Ozzie Jnr blasted 556 Flip. 142 Boxer George tboned 198 Ozzie Jnr. 333 Chaz jacked 142 Box, as 260 Keefy attacked 133 Karly. 556 Flip declared the winner this time.

The DD saw 23 cars make the track, although it was a very short affair. 198 Ozzie Jnr destroyed 583 Weeksy. 206 Kingy jacked 776 Newman, before 198 Ozzie Jnr followed in 363 Wayno. 333 Chaz blitzed 41 Balu. 831 Wally jacked 198 Ozzie Jnr. The red flags came out to assist 711 Churchy. This didn’t stop 198 Ozzie Jnr, who managed to back out of the pile up and jack 321 Chatty Man under the red flags. The DD was declared to allow 711 Churchy to receive medical assistance, and all at Caged! wish him a speedy recovery.

One of the best Bears Bash meetings saw some of the best action all year and some brilliant racing too; the crowd buzzing all evening which was helped by the fantastic Heat 1 which set the tone for the day. Hopefully the Bears raise a great total once again for the Rockinghorse charity.
