Back to Basics – 02/10/2016 – Northampton

A good turnout of cars, with quite a variety including 831 Simon Pope in a Mercedes C180, 6 Mark Holdsworth in a Mazda 2 and 217 Louis Tilson in a diminutive Hyundai Atoz.

Heat 1
23 Darren Hare spun early in the first heat on turn 3, as 111 Mark Bussey led. 7 Mick Pope spun on the home straight, before 157 Matthew McMahon, 711 Ryan Leech and 540 Adam James tangled on the home straight, T-boning McMahon towards turn 1. 711 Leech was then picked up by 227 Kyle Ewins, with 540 James on the back end to steam into the turn 1 fence, the resulting melee on turn 2 causing 426 Austin Burns to be tipped onto two wheels. 227 Ewins went on to fence 245 Eric Curtis on turn 1, as the red flags came out to check on 426 Burns. 111 Bussey led the restart from 88 Michael McCarthy and 31 Bradley McCarthy, as the lively 227 Ewins spun 35 Luke Pope on turn 1. 286 Dan Phillips spun onto the infield from the home straight, as 244 Eric Curtis, 452 Paul Sweet and 837 Martin Wesby combined to go hard into the turn 1 plating, while 111 Bussey took the flag.

Heat 2
A reduced field for the second heat saw 200 Richard Cornall soon spin on turn 3, as 218 Jordan Rengger and 31 McCarthy crashed off turn 4. 200 Cornall fenced 35 Pope on turn 1, before 289 Dan Walker spun hard into the turn 1 plating, 111 Bussey running into him with 200 Cornall crashing into Bussey on a now slippery oily surface. 352 Ben Mynott collected 111 Bussey, with 540 James running hard into Mynott, James got going again, only to be stuffed into 200 Cornall on the difficult turn 1 by 123 John Clements. 286 Phillips fenced 217 Tilson hard on turn 1, as 290 Ryan Anderson took the chequered.
Heat 2 (24 cars): 290, 123, 286, 831, 6, 540, 711, 352, nof.

Final
218 Rengger spun 831 Pope on turn 2 as the Final got underway, with 88 McCarthy leading. 31 McCarthy was forced into the fence by 6 Holdsworth, 711 Leech and 123 Clements as they battled over second place, Clements then fencing Leech on turn 3. Clements shed a wheel, bringing out the red flags, with 88 McCarthy leading 227 Ewins and 297 Lee Wiles for the restart. 286 Phillips shoved 6 Holdsworth wide into turn 3, before 297 Wiles hit 88 McCarthy wide into turn 1 to take over the lead. 286 Phillips fenced 88 McCarthy on turn 3, before spinning 6 Holdsworth, as 297 Wiles went on to take the win.
Final (16 cars): 297, 111, 6, 831, 227, nof.

DD
The DD started with 123 Clements fencing 297 Wiles and 31 McCarthy on turn 3, as 352 Mynott spun on turn 1. 123 Clements again lost a wheel, bringing out the red flags, but he remained on the track for the restart and managed to hit both 352 Mynott and 227 Ewins on turn 1. 222 Craig Gould spun 35 Pope on turn 3 before hitting the ailing 123 Clements. 6 Holdsworth fenced 222 Gould on turn 1 before weighing into 35 Pope on the back straight. 352 Mynott then caught alight on turn 2, bailing out quickly as the red flags came out. Just two cars were left for the restart with 6 Holdsworth hitting 35 Pope on the home straight, Pope slowing allowing Holdsworth to give him another hit on the home straight to get a little airtime. Pope then ground to a halt on the back straight, Holdsworth taking the win while 352 Mynott took the Most Destructed Award.
