Sunday 7th July 1997 - Foxhall Raceway - English Championship
The Sunday of the 1997 Spedeweekend saw the annual English Championship contested once again and was back to normal Unlimited ruling this year, with defending champion 194 Steve Anscombe in attendance.
Heat 1 begun with a pile up on the turnstile bend. 66 Rogers put away 144 Venables early on. 264 Wellard attacked 330 Went and 108 Softie did the same to 117 Kamikaze. 359 GB picked up 108 Softie who latched onto 410 Nutty and followed them all in, piling into the abandoned 66 Rogers car creating a huge wreck and leaving 410 Nutty stranded in the air. 117 Kamikaze jacked 414 Doom, allowing 108 Softie to weigh in on the former. 330 Went set about 108 Softie in turn, as 264 Wellard attacked 509 Gray. 330 Went diverted to the shale to home in on 264 Wellard to earn himself a disqualification. 283 Webby set about 509 Gray and then continued on to turn 440 Gerbil fence-wards, only to then cop a head on himself from 117 Kamikaze. 46 Keith Painter raced to the win closely followed by 444 Gary Cannell and 33 Gary Madgwick took third place.

Not for the first time over the weekend 410 Nutty was involved in the crash of the day - getting stuffed into 66 Mark Rogers empty motor from a combination of 108 Softie and 359 GB.

Heat 2 was a much subdued affair, although the action commenced from the drop of the green flag with 85 Stumpy attacking 445 Smith who rolled and landed on his wheels. 82 Winkle turned 44 Neate aside for the lead, the latter already having won the 1300 Stock Cars Sky Sports Trophy over the weekend. 488 United put away 467 Kingsnorth who was then jacked by 85 Stumpy in turn. 41 Skoyles set about 202 Jimbo. 152 Basho spun as 536 Nichols and 202 Jimbo collided on the scoreboard bend, the latter getting held up just enough to allow 41 Skoyles to drive through him while 82 Paul Tompkins took the win from 736 Mitch McGee and 510 Gordon Coull.

The English Championship race began with a big first bend push. 449 Polo attacked 330 Went whilst 41 Skoyles attacked 506 Mitchell. 414 Doom stuffed away 135 Mann, but was duly jacked himself by 41 Skoyles before the yellow flags came out for 263 Pitt. 256 Goudy spun 122 Sticko upon the resumption of play, and 351 Thorley set about 202 Jimbo. 359 GB put away 41 Skoyles. 449 Polo attacked 351 Thorley. At the front of the field, 46 Maverick spun 82 Winkle to move up to second place. 414 Doom delivered a huge jacking to 41 Skoyles. 488 United jacked 202 Jimbo. 46 Maverick bested 207 Showtime to take up the running; Showtime dwindling down the order after being spun by 82 Winkle. 46 Maverick tangled with 388 Emmo causing him to lose the lead, and then was stopped courtesy of a head on from 359 GB. 449 Polo jacked 46 Maverick and was jacked himself by 465 Havoc. 206 Kingy muscled his way past 82 Winkle to take the lead, as 449 Polo treated the spun 264 Wellard to a head on. Defending champion 194 Cecil ran 287 Gizmo into 465 Havoc; 302 Woody homing in for a shot on 194 Cecil. 122 Sticko jacked 449 Polo to end the action. 206 Dave King raced to the title, his first major title win and was followed home by 302 Deane Wood and 736 Mitch McGee.
