Man of the moment - 757 Callum Gill

Callum Gill has cemented himself as one of the sports’ finest with an incredible 2019 season and he has already started this season off with a bang! Bryson caught up with the youngster from West Norfolk.

Callum had a standout 2019 season which saw him take the 2l Tarmac World Championship, 1500 National Championship along with the Trackstar Points.
B - Well done on being part of the victorious Team Extreme outfit that took the Unlimited Icebreaker Championship for the third year running. You delivered arguably the hit of the meeting too! What’s your views on how the day went?
C - The day couldn’t of gone any better for myself and the team. We always aim to do well in the team meetings, but seems it was only Johnny and I that made it out for our first heat, it didn’t look promising; especially with me in a crown. The car went a lot better than I thought it was going to which was surprising! However, the hearse was just too irresistible to leave sat there. Charlie and I received a few decent finishes in the next heat in which Johnny won, with Terry winning the final and ultimately topping it off.

B - Always good when a day goes better than planned! You’ve come under criticism recently for avoiding the contact so do you think that hit has silenced those critics now?
C - Unfortunately you can’t always please everyone but I’m sure I proved myself on Sunday. My aim last year was to see if I could finish high in the points charts and after completing that I may be looking towards a different approach this coming year.

B - Well you comment on last year and what a year it was for you! Looking back on the 2019 season what stands out for you?
C - There were many good meetings throughout the year starting with Team Extreme winning Icebreaker 2019, but I must say the Birmingham 2l World Final was the best. I have never experienced much luck at Birmingham in the past but that day definitely made up for it! Surprisingly I managed to win the 1500 National in December and that finished the year off nicely for me.

B - Definitely a good year all round for you then! You mentioned earlier about potentially taking a different approach to the racing this year, but will you be looking to retain your titles at the same time? What do you have planned for the 2020 season?
C - To be honest I’m not really too bothered about winning the titles again this year. I’m hoping to just take the year as it comes and enjoy myself. We will see what happens in the coming months.

B - We look forward to seeing how it pans out! Any meetings in particular on the calendar at the moment?
C - Hopefully I’m going to do a few meetings away this year and potentially a trip to Ireland is also on the cards.

B - Get some new tracks under that CV! You went to watch at Emmen last year if I’m correct? Is that a track you’d like to do?
C - Yes I did go watch the Blue Oyster back in October. After going there to watch, the place has definitely caught my attention. The atmosphere, attitude and respect from the other drivers is what banger racing lacks over here.

Callum is looking to hopefully travel further afield in the year and looks to head across the water to Ireland, and who knows, maybe a trip to the mainland as well?
B - Definitely have the right idea over on the mainland! We always like to find out what drivers’ our interviewees rate within the sport to get an insight into the driver - anyone stand out for yourself?
C - There are many talented drivers out there but one man who can pilot anything he gets in and also knows how to put it to good use in my eyes is 617!

B - Think 617 would be high on most people’s list! Lastly, is there anyone you’d like to thank for their help behind the scenes?
C - There are many people who helped though out the years that I’d like to thank, you know who you all are! Big thanks to the apryl for putting up with it all 😂 Most of it probably wouldn’t of happened if it wasn’t for Joe Barrett (Panda Motorsports) for the late nights, the early mornings and the last minute decisions. None of it would have happened without Mum and Dad for the transport.
